Keepers

Samuel Butler (1825–1833, 1841–1845): The first keeper and a staunch abolitionist who used the lighthouse as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
Elijah Dixon (1833–1841): Served during the lighthouse’s first decade.
Thomas Greer (1845–1846): Held the position for a brief period in the mid-1840s.
Isaac Spear (1846–1849): Served three years as head keeper.
Hendrick E. Paine (1849–1853): A member of a prominent local family.
Olmsted Baker (1853–1856) & Halsey H. Baker (1856–1861): Successive keepers from the same family.
James McAdams (1861–1865): Served during the American Civil War.
George F. Rogers (1865–1871): The final keeper of the original tower before it was rebuilt.
Joseph C. Babcock (1871–1881, 1900–1919): A Civil War veteran and first keeper of the 1871 tower.
George L. Riker (1881–1900): Managed the light for nearly two decades.
Daniel I. Babcock (1919–1926): Son of Joseph Babcock; he oversaw the decommissioning of the main tower and the transition to the West Breakwater Light.
Frank Huntington (1926–1927): Served shortly after the new breakwater light was established.
Frank LaRose (1927–1937): Keeper during the early years of the breakwater station.
John E. Brophy (1937–1944): The final civilian keeper before the Coast Guard fully assumed operations.
